Many of our physical therapists have taken specialized continuing education courses for treating vestibular and balance disorders. We are very successful in assisting the patient resolve their balance and dizziness problems.

There are many causes for dizziness and balance difficulties. A common cause treated very successfully is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). BPPV is a disorder of the inner ear. The inner ear has a system of semicircular canals that assist in a person’s sense of balance. When an individual is afflicted with BPPV, calcium crystals are deposited in the inner ear and activate sensors that communicate with the brain regarding balance. The presence of the loose calcium crystals in the semicircular canals results in vertigo or dizziness.

Physical therapists will perform repositioning procedures to assist in the reabsorption of the loose calcium crystals from the semicircular canals. They will prescribe balance exercises in the clinic as well as a home exercise program.
